Consumers are unique, but many share the same food allergies. A reaction to proteins in certain foods can be deadly if not treated properly. Restaurants and food manufacturers are legally responsible for ensuring every ingredient is clearly labeled with an allergen report.
By reading the allergen report, consumers make an informed decision when eating a product. MenuCalc’s Allergen Reporting delivers all crucial information about potential allergen and contamination concerns in an easy-to-read allergen report. Use our Smart tool to detect the presence of food allergens and more accurately label your menu.
According to the FDA, 2% of adults and 5% of children and infants suffer from food allergies. To help protect consumers, the Food and Drug Administration enforces regulations and requirements regarding food labeling. Correctly labeling ingredients can help prevent or reduce the 30,000 emergency room visits and 150 allergen-related deaths in its annual report.
Currently, eight major food groups create approximately 90% of food allergens. Consumers are most likely allergic to milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans. The ninth major food allergen is sesame. Reporting requirements for sesame will go into effect in January 2023.
Currently, there are no cures for allergies; consumers must avoid problematic food to stay healthy. To accommodate this, the FDA requires that any food, not a raw agricultural commodity, be labeled. Manufacturers must use the usual name of an ingredient for easy identification. Using easy-to-read labeling helps consumers who read the labels avoid anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction to food.
Note: Different states have rules in addition to the regulations put in place federally. For example, Louisiana requires all restaurants in the state to label every shrimp and crawfish dish with the seafood’s country of origin. Consult one of our many certified menu labeling experts about state-specific requirements.
